edit i found a line that i think is where the imagery of the sea creatures came from "Allegedly, he rowed here from the mainland in a boat without a bottom, so all the creatures of the sea could rise at night to converse with him. Maybe that was just because he was surrounded by the sea. There were some that looked like animals and octopuses. Now what the actual chemical diagrams are I am not sure. i think our narrator must have also been in a job with electrical diagrams and circuit boards as there is a line where he said he had tried to put together the electrical components of the brakes system in the car after the accident to try and work out why they didnt work.

The man who crashed into Esther worked in a job that was science based (i am forgetting the actual term). From what I have read they are all chemical diagrams.
